Food for thought

Food for thought - Nutrition for your loved one.

Smart food choices make a difference in our health. Healthy meals can prevent serious illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke or cancer.

We’ve done our research and put together the top 10 tips on how to eat healthy:

  1. Use oil instead of butter.
  2. Bake, roast, steam or boil instead of frying.
  3. Drink plenty of water. Avoid sweet drinks like soda.
  4. Eat fruit, vegetables, seeds, and nuts for snacks instead of sweets and salty products.
  5. Eat whole grain or bran cereals for breakfast (check the amount of sugar per serving and choose these with fewer than 10 gram).
  6. Limit red meats. Eat more fish and poultry.
  7. Put smaller portions of food on your plate as our metabolism slow down with age.
  8. Avoid processed foods which are high in salt and fat.
  9. Buy low-fat and fat-free dairy products.
  10. Read the labels before you put the product into your shopping cart.

It is crucial for our body to receive the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.  We should keep in mind that food is the best source of nutrients.

The role of a caregiver

Caretakers need to be aware of the client’s health conditions so they can apply the right approach to cooking and preparing meals. It is very important to fulfill client’s nutrition needs on a daily basis and cut back on processed foods which contain high amounts of salt and fat. So important that I made cooking skills one of my company fundamental requirements for home care aids applying for a job.

All caregivers are capable of making homemade meals from scratch. Not only do they prepare delicious meals but also are conscious of specific dietary needs. For instance, a home assistant working for a person with high cholesterol knows that the client demands a low-fat diet. A client with high blood pressure requires a low-sodium diet.

Our companions and caregivers cook tasty meals so you can enjoy your food while delivering nutrients and healthy ingredients to your body. Eat healthy. Stay healthy.
